World War

What I know and What I Wonder

We spent some time creating a poster in our books of things we already knew about World War 1 and World War 2 and some things we wonder.

We are learning about songs from War Time in Music, follow the link below to hear what we're doing.

Causes of WW1

In History we began by looking and the causes of WW1. Each of us was given an event on a coloured piece of car and we had to find others with the same colour. Once we had done that it was our task to put them in the correct order. Mrs Crowther told us the colours related to a specific country and that all of these events led to WW1. As a class we spent some time creating one timeline and were able to discuss similar things happening at the same time in different countries or any differences.

We looked at a map of Europe at the time and identified the countries that were involved. We created a key to show which countries had allegiances to each other.

Build up to WW2

After learning about the beginning of WW1 we leaped forward to compare with the lead up of WW2. We talked about the 'zones of influence' and used a picture as a stimulus to note what we could see, what we think is happening and what we would need to find out about the picture.

We had information about events leading up to the war and spent some time in pairs discussing them and putting them in order.

The Home Front - Propaganda

We had a class discussion about the impact of the first and second world wars on children at home in Britain when talking about cause and effect. We learnt about different aspects of lives that were changed including education, fathers and brothers not home and women needing to work outside of the home for the first time. The effects on children because of the war such as being more frugal or salvaging for metal was something we found interesting.

We looked at and compared examples of propaganda posters from WW1 and WW2 and discussed any similarities and differences. Individually we then created our own to promote different ideas.

The Home Front - Evacuation

After learning about different ways the country was affected on the home front we looked specifically at children. Evacuation in WW2 was something that affected children and our local area. We simulated an evacuation and discussed how we felt.

We were lucky enough to have a contact with a lady who was evacuated to Seascale as a child during the war and so we wrote her a letter asking some questions.

After learning about all the different ways children we affected we build a diamond nine describing which we felt had the biggest impact on children's lives.

Technological advancements

We began learning about different technologies available with a focus on; communication, ammunition and transport. We have learnt to identify the effect of inventions during WW1 and WW2 and their impact on today's world as either a positive or negative and we presented these ideas to the class.
