Scaffold the World
Kaefer visited the school and ran a "Scaffold the World" activity day. The children learned about different jobs and how the fit into a hierarchy.
The children took on the roles of: Project Manager, Health and Safety Manager, Finance Manager, Quantity Surveyor and Scaffolders.
Initially the children looked at existing structures in the world and placed them on the globe.
After looking at existing structures the task was presented. The children had to create a scaffold so that the world was off the floor and could be accessed from every angle so workers could repair the ozone layer.
During the design process the Finance Manager had to manage the cost of materials being used and ensured the project stayed within budget.
When the designs had been completed Kaefer explained the importance of safety at work. Once we identified hazards we decided it would be good to try on some safety equipment.
Finally the children constructed there scaffolds, remembering to work safely throughout.
The completed structures
When all the structures were completed Kaefer had to decide which team had earned the contract. The selection criteria was based on: budget, teamwork, safety and who had stayed close to their design process.
The Winning Team
Throughout the day there were some standout performers who excelled in various areas. These children received a special mention for Kaefer.
