Religion and Ritual

Our topic for this term is Religion and Ritual in the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age.

We have had a very strange object appear in our school this week. All Miss Little told us was that it was from the Stone Age and that it had appeared in the school. We had to investigate to find out what it was and what it was used for. Through our research and previous knowledge of the Stone Age, we found out that it was a Shigir Idol. We had lots of ideas about what it was for such as worshipping gods or as a symbol to remember loved ones that were no longer with us.

In History this week, we received an evidence pack. This was full of information about the Mesolithic Period. Lots of the evidence led us to believe that hunter-gatherers who lived in the Mesolithic Period, believed that there were beings who were half human and half animal and that it was possible for people to turn into animals. Following these findings we decided to turn ourselves into a mashup of animals and humans.

In History this week, we learnt more about Stonehenge including how and why it was built. We used biscuits to construct our own version of a burrow and Stonehenge itself. We were rewarded for our hard work afterwards by eating the biscuits!

Today we learnt that people in the Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age, worshipped the sun. They had lots of items such as jewellery and weapons made gold. We decided to create replicas of these objects. We the learnt that at the end of the Bronze Age, people began to worship the water instead of the sun. They would take their previous items and ‘kill them’ by destroying them and then laying them in the river. We thought that this was possible to ensure people did not use their items again or maybe to send them down the river to a better place. We decided to use our objects we had ,ade earlier and recreate this ritual.

Today we learnt about the Druids and Gods of the Stone Age. We then made some replicas of some objects we had discovered such at druids eggs and torks.
