Black History Month

Benjamin Zephaniah

Our significant person of study for this month has been Benjamin Zephaniah.

We began by looking at some photographs of Benjamin and learnt a technique to draw detailed portraits.

We spent time researching him and linking to our English work, we wrote a detailed biography including all we’d learnt about his life.

We began reading Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah and started to learn about the differences and similarities between Jamaica and the UK.

We spent some time learning about the Empire Windrush and what became known as the Windrush Generation. We used an atlas to plot the route taken.

We discussed the impact of Windrush on Britain at the time and learnt about the Notting Hill Carnival and designed and decorated our own masks.

Our English unit based around The Undefeated has provided us with lots of opportunities to learn about the American civil rights movement and study influential American and British black people from a variety of different industries in the form of biographies. Follow the link below to find out more.

We showcased all our learning in a whole school assembly
