Can your identify Pollinators in your garden or during your daily exercise walk?
Fundamental to the web of life, pollinators help provide one third of the food we eat, pollinate more than 80% of our flowering plants and contribute around £690 million a year to the UK economy. Pollinators are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many wildlife rely on for food and shelter.
However, our wild pollinators are in trouble. More than half of UK bee, butterfly and moth species have declined in the past 50 years, and 30 species of bees face extinction. If you could spend just 10 minutes a day out in your garden recording for us it will give vital information on pollinators across Cumbria. Your records will be added to the Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre database, providing county and national records. Use the Bumble Bees and Butterfly spotter guides to identify your species to record on your pollinator recording sheet. There is also a useful guide on how to record the buzz!
If you are up for the challenge, have a go at the Pollinator Quiz and send your answers to claire.johnson@pbp.org.uk
