The Intent, Implementation and Impact of Global Learning at Seascale Primary School

Intent

Global Learning is becoming an integral part of learning at Seascale School. Our global learning is being designed to enable pupils to understand the links between their own lives and those of people around the world. We aim to help prepare children for the ever-changing world in which they live.

Global Learning at Seascale is linked with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on developing knowledge and understanding, values and attitude and skills.

Our intent is to:

  • help young people understand their role in a globally interdependent world and explore strategies by which they can make it more just and sustainable,
  • familiarise pupils with the concepts of interdependence, development, globalisation and sustainability
  • enable teachers to move pupils from a charity mentality to a social justice mentality
  • stimulate critical thinking about global issues, both at a whole school and pupil level
  • promote greater awareness of poverty and sustainability
  • explore alternative models of development and sustainability in the classroom.

Implementation

In EYFS, children develop their sense of belonging in our world. We enhance our Global Learning opportunities in EYFS with a sustained international link with a school based in Nepal. Please see the ‘EYFS Intent, Implementation and Impact’ document for further information which details how the specific area ‘Understanding the World’ is delivered to naturally compliment how they children are developing skills.

The curriculum planning process involves making natural links to our wider curriculum with the Sustainable Development Goals. In conjunction with our curriculum we utilise globally recognised celebrations and events such as; World Food Day, International Day of Education, World Earth and Ocean Day and Fairtrade Fortnight. Work relating to our global learning is recorded as part of our curriculum learning, discussions during assembly and our website. To support the delivery of the curriculum we use a range of programmes and schemes for example;

  • Kapow
  • Picture News

As a school we follow the Kapow scheme as part of our PSHE and RSE curriculum. Primary key areas where; for example, Citizenship and Economic Wellbeing are interwoven throughout the year to establish links and complement our teaching in Parliament Week and Money Week.

Picture News leads our assemblies from EYFS to Year 6 and is used in a way that creates though-provoking discussion amongst the children on sometimes challenging but important global issues. Each Picture News topic highlights a relevant British Value, Protected Characteristic and links to the United Nationals Rights of a Child.

We are very proud to offer a varied and diverse curriculum and enhance this with;

  • School visits
  • Visitors to our school
  • CDEC
  • Global Links

The Seascale Eco-Council and School Council are central to driving the 17 sustainabile global goals to create a whole school approach to enable our children to be responsible global citizens.

High levels of English and Maths is encouraged when appropriate during global learning.

Impact

The impact from our Global Learning opportunities enable children to:

  • Take purposeful action to improve their own lives.
  • Empathise and make connections with the world in which they live.
  • Have greater understanding of their own and other cultures making informed decisions with awareness of how their actions affect the world we live in.

We are incredibly proud of our Eco-Council and all the work they do in school and our community.
