Traditional Tales and Fables

Our topic for Spring 1 is Traditional Tales and Fables.

In the first lesson of our new topic, we learnt what a fable is. We discussed how fables usually include animals and that the type of animal can give us an insight into their personality. We are going to be listening to fable; The Scorpion and the Frog. We began by acting out what the characters’ personalities might be like. We then did some research on a Frog and a Scorpion to help us imagine what they might be like in the story.

In English we had further discussion about the fable ‘The Frog and the Scorpion’. We pretended that we were either the Frog’s friend or the Scorpion’s friend. We then got in partners and created a 2-5 minute performance of a conversation that these two characters might have. We learnt about how we could use our bodies and our tone of voice to show emotion and expression.

Today we read a new fable; ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’. We lied down and closed our eyes so that we could picture the scene and the characters whilst we listened to the story. We then discussed what we thought the right thing to do was. We had a vote and the majority of the class decided that the Ant should have let the Grasshopper in as she could die without food or shelter.

In English we have been learning about compound sentences. We used verses from familiar nursery rhymes to create some of our own compound sentences.

We have been learning about complex sentences. We used our knowledge of the fables we had read so far to create some complex sentences.

Today we began writing our plan for our new version of one of the 3 fables we have read so far. We changed the characters and the setting and wrote down some things the characters might say to each other
