Prehistoric Art

Our topic for this term is Prehistoric Art.

In the first week of our new topic, we used the question matrix to develop questions about examples of prehistoric art. We talked about the purpose of the art and that it may have been to show us what kind of animals were around back then. We then discussed what animals we have in Britain now, that we would want to show people in 1000 years time. We then drew those animals.

This week we learnt about how charcoal is made to create prehistoric art. We used this material to scale up our drawings from last week. We had to look closely at the different shapes to enable us to enlarge it.

Today we got very messy, it was great!! We noticed that a lot of prehistoric art included hand prints. We learnt about the difference between positive and negative hand prints and decided to have a go at making our own.

As part of of beach trip, we spoke about what natural materials might have been used to create art in the Stone Age. As we knew from our history lesson that they didn’t have access to paint like ours. We used these natural materials to create prints by putting them between material and tapping them with a rock.

As we had previously talked about the fact that people in prehistoric times did not have access to the same paint that we have. We talked about where else they may access materials to create art. We came up with lots of natural materials including spices. We then had a go at making our own natural paint using flour and spices.

We used the natural paint that we made in the previous week to paint the animals we chose in the first week. We used couscous to create a rough background to represent a cave wall.
