Light

I wonder ...

Explore how light travels

Rocket Words - symbol, eye, light, light source, scientific diagram

We conducted a mini experiment using tubes and torches. In our groups we had the question, can you see the light? We had to discuss this question while the tube was straight and then again once we had bent it. It made it really clear to us that light travels in straight lines.

Light experiment

Using our experiment we were then tasked with drawing scientific diagrams, ensuring we used the correct labels and symbols needed.

Using a simulator to explore colour vision

Explore reflection

Rocket Words - reflected, mirror, bounce, direction, surface

We discussed what reflection meant and how light reflection is a change in the direction of the light wave falling on a reflective surface. We talked about how we looked at a mirror would affect what we see because the angle changes and how the surface of the object will affect how much light is reflected.

Explore reflection and explain how it can be used to help us see

Rocket words - periscope, angle, mirror, line of sight, utilise

We talked about reflection and how mirrors are used to help us see something out of our line of sight. We learnt about different situations where it is useful; in cars etc. From there we designed and created our own periscope.

Investigate how shadows can change

Rocket words - shadow, block, opaque, transparent, translucent

We talked about shadows and how they are created using scientific words as above. We learnt about how they can change depending on the transparency of the object blocking the light and the position of the light source.

We conducted an enquiry to answer a question we had about shadows including distance and height.

Explore light phenomena

Rocket words - optical, phenomena, disperse, spectrum, refraction

We conducted four mini experiments to test different light phenomena.

Experiment 1 - Placing a straw in water

Experiment 2 - Blowing bubbles

Experiment 3 - Placing a mirror in water on a sunny day

Experiment 4 - Looking at drawings through light filter
